WRAPPED OBJECTS ASSIGNMENT:

for those of you who missed class on Thursday, please read this important clarification about your project:

Whether you are doing a 2D or Drawing portfolio, all of your work will be judged as 2D pieces or drawings/paintings- NOT as 3D objects. Your photo or drawing/painting IS the artwork.  You will need to think about and create a VISUAL ENVIRONMENT for your wrapped objects, not just take a casual photo of a 3D object.   You need to create meaning for your work by creating a relationship between the wrapped object(s) and the background.

For examples on how to do this, please look at this powerpoint about the contemporary artist Sandy Skoglund.  She sculpts objects, but her main work is the photographs she makes of the objects.  There is a specific relationship between the figures and sculptures in her work and the surrounding scene.   Some of her work DOES involve wrapping: note the still life wrapped up in layers and layers of saran wrap, broken glass on the figures, walls, and floor in "Breathing Glass,"  hamburger meat on the figure, walls, and floors in "In the Flesh," cheese puffs on the figures, clothing, floor, walls, and furniture in "The Cocktail Party," even gum stuck on everything in the photo "Germs are Everywhere."   Look also at the design relationships in the "food" pieces at the end of the powerpoint.

Again, the PHOTO or DRAWING is the artwork, not just the wrapped object(s).  Note how for "Radioactive Cats," she sketches out arrangements of the scene FIRST before setting up the objects for the shoot.  This is akin to what animators do for games, cartoon films, etc.--- they do not simply jump to the cameras and computers to create their work: they create storyboards first (a sketch of what each frame would look like).  This is not just old school methodology; you can look up Pixar Studios and see their storyboard work.  Remember multiple sketches will give you multiple options--- a big part of being creative is going PAST the first thing that occurs to you and seeing what else is out there.  Broaden your horizons!

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me over the weekend.  I would be happy to look at sketches, proposals, works in progress, etc.
